The Next Andromeda Strain

The flood of illegal immigrants crossing our borders, particularly from Mexico is out of control. Thousands of illegals are sneaking across our borders in the South West daily.

They bring with them much more than illegal drugs, crime and the ability to rob our candy store, which is bad enough, they are bringing with them the most dreaded invisible predicament that Americans can face, Disease! [My emphasis]

I am not just talking about the recent "Swine Flu" epidemic; I am concerned about the rise of diseases that we have not been seen in the U.S. in decades. There have been increased cases of TB, Hepatitis, Leprosy, Dengue, Syphilis and Chagas.

In 2001, New York's Tuberculosis Control Program discovered that 81 percent of that city's new cases of TB were attributed to immigrants.

Cases of TB are now being found in many areas of the country, where there are high concentrations of illegal immigrants. In March of 2002, The Washington Post reported that Virginia's Prince William County experienced a 188 percent increase of TB infections over the previous year. Yes, the streets of Prince William County are over-run with illegal aliens seeking day-laborer jobs.

For 40 years, the number of recorded cases of Leprosy within the United States totaled 900. Today, we know of more than 7,000 current cases of leprosy in the U.S. The majority of people in the U.S. who are suffering from leprosy are from Mexico, Brazil, and the Caribbean.

After cases of Chagas were reportedly discovered to have been spread by transfusions in Canada, that nation began testing all blood donations for the disease.

In March, 2002 health officials said, "The rise of TB and other diseases we are now seeing in the U.S., is largely a consequence of the migration of people from parts of the world where the disease is common."

Your pet is required to have an International Health Certificate (APHIS FORM 7001 - "United States Interstate & International Certificate of Health Examination for Small Animals") to be completed by an APHIS accredited veterinarian who certifies animal health status, conducts tests, and records test results for the individual animals being exported or if you take your pet in or out of the country. However, not you or anyone else who enters the U.S. So, let me see if I understand this, we are more concerned about spreading diseases amongst dogs and cats than humans.

The warning signs are here, however, our political leaders will undoubtedly continue to ignore them. Our own president is willing to place all Americans at risk, in exchange for securing the Hispanic vote for the Democratic Party. The Republicans are also in compliance trying to secure the vote for themselves. It is about time they acted responsibly in a non-partisan manner and secured the borders. Neither party will then have to worry about the vote.

As of this writing, 149 people in Mexico have died from the current Swine Flu epidemic. However, how many Americans have to die before we wake up and do the right thing.

They are dying, not from Swine Flu but from all the other disease that are now finding their way across our borders. Our leaders have ignored the earlier warnings from America's health organizations. What will it take to get them to open their eyes; perhaps an outbreak of Ebola or Hemorrhagic fever.

Here is what the Obama administration has done. They appear to be using this latest problem to take the heat off the economic turmoil we are facing. Let us look at reality.

Thousands of people die each year in the U.S. from ordinary influenza viruses. As of this writing, there are less than 50 cases of Swine Flu that have been diagnosed and no one has died, or is so gravely ill that they are likely to die. Only one person has been hospitalized. So why the sudden panic? As Rahm Emanuel, President Obama's Chief of Staff is quoted as saying, "Never let a good crisis go to waste."

In, 1976, 19-year old, Army recruit David Lewis died from the swine flu. Two weeks after his death, health officials disclosed to America that something called "swine flu" had killed Lewis and put four of his fellow recruits in the hospital.

The portentous name of this flu alone was enough to touch off civilian fear of an epidemic. Government doctors knew from tests hurriedly conducted at Fort Dix in New Jersey, after Lewis' death that 500 soldiers had caught swine flu without falling ill. Under the direction of the CDC a national vaccination program was conducted. Forty-million Americans were vaccinated with disastrous results.

More than 500 people are thought to have developed Guillain-Barre syndrome after receiving the vaccine; 25 people died. No one completely understood the causes of Guillain-Barre, but the condition apparently can develop after a bout with an infection or following surgery or vaccination. The federal government paid out millions in damages to people or their families who had received the vaccination.

So what will be the economic downside from this panic?

You cannot get the virus from eating pork products, yet six countries have banned importing pork from the U.S. There go U.S. exports of pork products.

It has been suggested that travel to Mexico be curtailed. There goes the travel and hotel industry.

During his recent trip to Mexico President Obama had shaken the hand of Felipe Solis, a Mexican archeologist, who died from the Swine Flu the day after he shook the President's hand. President Obama has not gotten sick.

It appears that this past weekend has been a slow news weekend. The media is running with the story as though we are in an imminent risk of a medical holocaust. What they should be focusing on is the following:

If left unchecked, illegal immigration will destroy this nation one way or another. It is time to put the lid on the Petri-dish by closing our borders.

And, that is my opinion.
