My name is Aaron Penland & I live in Asheville, North Carolina.
We are in the midst of a Three Year Battle With a Multi-Million dollar-Multi-National Company named CTS, based out of Elkhardt Indiana, as well as The Environmental Protection Agency Region IV (EPA) and North Carolina Department Of Environmental Natural Resources{NCDENR}.
CTS of Asheville was an Electro-Plating Facility that used many toxic chemicals in their operation. Some of the chemicals they used were Trichloroethylene{TCE}, Benzine,Chromium VI & Cyanide to name a few. CTS of Asheville abandoned their facility in 1986.
EPA Region 4 has been aware of activities on the property since 1980 when CTS of Asheville was first identified as a Waste Handler . After being notified by a local citizen in 1990 of potential hazardous substances in a neighboring property owner's drinking water source , EPA hired a contractor to identify and test wells for contamination.
Although 397 wells were identified in close proximity, only one well was tested 4,226 feet away. The original neighboring drinking water source{less than 400 ft} was not tested until 9 years later, when it was found to be heavily contaminated. In that family there are 2 brain tumors and one case of thyroid cancer.
Within a one-mile radius of the plant we have confirmed 79 cancer related deaths with 49 of those being Non-Hodgkin Lymphomas. To date the Contaminates have shown up in wells over 3/4 of a mile away. One area in particular is at great risk as they are located between 2 confirmed areas with very high levels of contamination. The area in Question is called Chapel Hill Church Rd.
Latest testing shows very high levels of TCE at one residents house at the beginning of the road and TCE has shown up in a spring at the end of the road. Also the development located downgradeant was put on municipal water 1 1/2 years ago due to contamination. Common sense would lead one to believe that it is only a matter of time before the others become contaminated.
We need help, our local Government will not REACT until after the wells have become contaminated, the EPA is taking the same stance. I personally have lost 10 family members in 10 years to cancer. Please if there is anything you can do or anywhere you can point us let us know. We are out of options and running out of time.
